Corrections Consultation

PURPOSE

The Corrections Consultation concluded in March 2006 with the Corrections Action Plan, which was approved by the Yukon government and First Nation Chiefs on April 3, 2006, at the Yukon Forum.

On December 8, 2006, at the Yukon Forum, the Correctional Redevelopment Strategic Plan was approved by the Yukon government and First Nation Chiefs. The Strategic Plan reflects the spirit and intent of the Corrections Action Plan and provides the direction for redeveloping the correctional system in Yukon.

The vision, goals and initiatives set out in the Strategic Plan are very briefly summarized below. See the Correctional Redevelopment Strategic Plan for details and Correctional Redevelopment Strategic Plan - The First Year in Review: January-December 2007. See also the Correctional Redevelopment Strategic Plan 2009 - The Second Year in Review for progress from January 2008 to March 31, 2009.

Vision

In order to achieve a vision of becoming the best correctional system in Canada, the Department of Justice is committed to working collaboratively with First Nations, non-government organizations and other government departments to achieve the following goals:

Goal 1

To implement the recommendations of the Corrections Action Plan in order to substantially improve the quality of correctional programs offered to victims, offenders and community members.

Initiatives:

The two key initiatives are:

  • implement a client-focused correctional program delivery model; and
  • develop a correctional centre that reflects the needs of offenders and that supports staff.

Goal 2

To fundamentally change the operation of the correctional system so that the Department of Justice, First Nations and other service providers are better able to deliver high-quality correctional programs.

Initiatives:

The three key initiatives are:

  • develop the mission, values and vision statements that will guide the Community Justice and Public Safety division of the Department of Justice, as it implements correctional redevelopment;
  • provide support and development opportunities to employees, volunteers and community members; and
  • develop a regulatory environment and organizational framework that supports the delivery of programs.
